Frequently Asked Questions

How is Pilates different from other exercise programs?
Each exercise in the method emphasizes the strengthening your core – abdomen, lower back, inner/outer thighs, and buttocks. Pilates focuses not only on strengthening, but lengthening and toning your entire body at the same time without adding bulk to your muscles.

What can I expect during my first class?
At Pilates North you can expect your first visit to the studio to be a friendly inviting experience.  You will be in a class with people who are also just starting with Pilates.  Your first class will focus on the basic principles of Pilates and will incorporate some of the introductory exercises. Usually you will start lying on your back and progress to your side or front, to seated and then to all fours.

How many classes a week should I do?
While Pilates is ideally done at least 3 times per week, most people feel the benefits from even 1 workout a week. As you become more proficient with the sequence of exercises, you can easily supplement classes with mat workouts at home.

How soon after I start Pilates will I see results and feel a difference?
Individual results will vary, but after one session, you will experience a heightened awareness of your body, particularly your posture. With consistent practice, you will gain increased strength in your core and be well on your way to achieving true mental and physical fitness

Do you offer Drop in Classes?
No.  Pilates North only offers registered classes.  Our system is progressive.  This is what makes us DIFFERENT then gyms or class-card based studios.    We work in small groups with a focus on moving forward in the exercise. This means that the next class builds, and progresses on what you learned in the previous class. We work with people who are willing to make a commitment to improving their bodies and health.  Those who are serious about Pilates and seeing the effects of the exercise understand that progressive classes are best way to see results.

I have done Pilates before, do I have to take an Introductory class?
If you wish to take a more advanced class and you are new to the studio, you must book an assessment appointment with one of our trainers.  During this hour long session the trainer will take you through an intermediate workout.  From here they will be able to assess your ability as it relates to our ongoing classes.  50% of the cost for the assessment will be credited toward the first class you register for.

Do men participate in Pilates?
Yes!!! The Pilates method was designed by a man, Joseph Pilates. Everyone from professional athletes to regular guys currently reap the benefits of Pilates.

Will we be using the equipment?
Introductory classes focus mainly on mat.  Once the basic principles are understood and clients are performing exercises correctly small apparatus will be included in your workout to help with stability exercises or to challenge balance and strengthEquipment with spring resistance such as the chair or reformer are incorporated into intermediate level classes.
